God assails my ears

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"You desire neither sacrifice nor offering. You have opened [karah] my ears" (Psalm 40:6-8).

The Hebrew word 'karah' means to hollow or dig out, to bore into, to make a hollow. God has often to bore into our ear in order to make possible our hearing and to get our attention. It is a process which can sometimes prove to be very painful!

The Lord, in fact, does not wish for our sacrifices or expiatory offerings, but rather a heart that listens and obeys. God awaits the reply from our heart, "Here I come, and I take pleasure in doing your will!"
