That I may know your testimonies

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"I am Your servant; give me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies [edah]" (Psalm 119:125).

The Hebrew word edah means 'testimony', 'witness', although it is often translated as 'statutes' (NIV) or 'decrees' (NRSV). In fact, the 'testimonies' of God are commandments that show what will happen. This is why the psalmist could say, "I love your testimonies [edah] because I know you will put away all the wicked of the earth" (Psalm 119:119).

The 'testimonies' of God are based on His righteousness and His faithfulness (Psalm 119:138) and are established forever (Psalm 119:152). When we understand that all the 'testimonies' of God will be fulfilled, we can more and more trust Him.
