You will be a special treasure to Me

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure [segula] to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine" (Exodus 19:5).

The Hebrew word segula means 'treasure', 'particular possession'. Here, segula describes the Israelites in their unique relationship they have with the Lord. The Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, Israel for His special treasure (Psalm 135:4). He surrounds him, He instructs him and He keeps him as the apple of His eye (Deuteronomy 32:10).

This is why anyone who touches Israel touches the apple of God's eye (Zechariah 2:8). So, at the Day of the Lord, God will push the nations to assemble against Jerusalem, and in order to show He is the God of Israel, He will destroy all these nations (Zechariah 12:1-9).
