The Elect Lady

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"To the elect lady [kuria] and her children, whom I love in truth" (2 John 1:1).

The Greek word kuria is the feminine of Kurios, which means Lord. Kurios is the Lord Jesus Christ and Lady (Kuria in Greek) is a metaphor for the Church, a coded way of referring to it as His Bride. The apostle John truly loved the Church and the children of God who made it up, and that is why he wrote these Letters.

Because of the Roman censorship at that time, and the persecution that resulted from it, John wrote discreetly to encourage his brothers to walk in love and truth. This Letter is always relevant, and so let us be careful and watchful, for such times are soon to return.
