God's multicoloured grace

by Jean-Louis Coraboeuf

"As good stewards [oikonomos] of the manifold [poikilos] grace of God, let each one minister to others with the gifts that he has received” (1 Peter 4:10).

The Greek adjective poikilos, translated as manifold, means also multi-coloured, embroidered with various colours, made artistically and with variety. God’s grace is rich and varied and, therefore produces a variety of gifts [charisma] among His children. Accordingly, we are literally called to be good stewards [oikonomos] in God’s House, and thus to offer our gifts in the service of the people of God’s House, into which He has placed us.

This is how grace is multiplied, and the Donor will transmit the essential strength to us, so that everything may glorify God (1 Peter 4:11). And if we allow Him to act through us, God will practise His rich and varied Art through us.
